HDR in Cinema: Addressing Versioning with a Practical Workflow

W217-W218 | NAB Show Programming | SMPTE Future of Cinema | Open to All Badge Holders

Cinematic HDR is becoming a reality, bringing significant improvements in brightness, contrast, and color gamut. As multiple companies introduce their own approaches to HDR, the industry faces a growing challenge of content versioning. Different HDR implementations will inevitably require separate deliverables, adding complexity to post-production and distribution.

In this session, we present a technical collaboration between Colorfront and Barco, focused on managing this versioning challenge efficiently. We will outline a practical workflow that simplifies HDR mastering and conversion, ensuring high-quality results across different projection systems.

These findings suggest that, rather than adding complexity, HDR could streamline workflows for cinema, showcasing Barco’s recently released HDR Lightsteering projector with its potential of high dynamic range for theatrical presentation.

5:15 – 6:15 p.m.

Joining us will be Cinematographer, Alice Brooks ASC, and Editor, Myron Kerstein ACE, as they discuss how their collaboration helped to visually redefine this modern Broadway classic into the grandeur of Wicked: The Movie.

From the wonder of sets constructed on a massive scale to the intricate, award-winning costume design, few elements of the production stand out on screen more than the collaboration between this Cinematographer and Editor as they visually interpret the magic of Director Jon M. Chu’s ambitious vision in this awe-inspiring portrayal of the Land of Oz before Dorothy.

The Future of Content Delivery: An Open Capacity Marketplace

W4143 Startup Stage | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Startup Stage | Open to All Badge Holders

Streaming video dominates internet traffic, accounting for over 65% of all internet volume. But the way content owners find and procure capacity to deliver their streaming video is complicated, especially in today’s multi-CDN delivery architectures. What’s more, many network operators, from smaller CDNs to ISPs to ATSC 3.0 broadcasters, can find it difficult to reach content providers. The Open Capacity Marketplace (OCM) represents a paradigm shift in how content delivery capacity is sourced, priced and provisioned.

This presentation will explore:

  • How OCM creates an industry-owned marketplace rather than a single-vendor solution.
  • The blockchain technology powering immutable proof-of-delivery and removing complex bilateral business agreement formations and operations.
  • How the marketplace enables content providers to access capacity from multiple sources through a single interface.
  • How non-traditional capacity providers like ISPs, TV broadcasters and DePIN networks benefit from participation.
  • How multicast delivery capabilities can dramatically reduce costs for large-scale live events.

This session will also discuss how this blockchain-powered marketplace model promotes greater transparency, flexibility and cost control while enabling broader geographic coverage and improved service quality. Learn how OCM is democratizing access to wholesale content delivery pricing that was previously available only to the largest content providers, and how your organization can benefit from this revolutionary approach.

Likewise, what do you do when you push Source, Destination, Take and nothing happens? How do you make sure that the SDP file is valid, formatted correctly and not malformed?

Join this session to find out:
Why do you need NMOS and how can you apply it within your 2110 workflows?
How can you spot and prevent common NMOS/SDP problems?

Hollywood is in the midst of generational shifts in business models and consumer habits. Media company consolidation, the lingering effects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes, and ongoing migration of consumers to social platforms, including TikTok which is grappling with its own existential crisis. But innovators often find that the largest opportunities emerge during the most uncertain of times. Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, Candle Media Co-founders and Co-CEOs,  share insights on how major Hollywood players are recalibrating, the future of content investment and distribution, how production methodologies and form factors may change over the next decade, and what it takes for leaders and organizations to get ahead of and capitalize on these seismic shifts. AES67, ST 2110 and IPMX – Difference, Commonalities & Interoperability

W2831 Theater 3 | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Theater 3 | Open to All Badge Holders

Originally, the definition of IPMX started from the proven grounds of AES67 and SMPTE ST 2110. While AES67 and ST 2110 were built around the interoperability requirements of the broadcast realm, it became immediately apparent that for application to the world of ProAV enhanced functionality would be required, while certain requirements indispensible to the broadcast world would be too complex or rigid – namely the very strict timing and synchronization requirements only made possible by the use of PTP. During development of the IPMX specifications within the VSF group it became clear that certain constraints and enhancements had to be made with respect to AES67 and ST 2110 to enable wider adoption in the ProAV domain.

IPMX is now taking shape with several companies having announced product availability. While the larger focus of IPMX interoperability is on the video side of things, audio is certainly a very important aspect. And with over 5000 AES67- or ST 2110-compatible audio devices in the market, it would certainly be a massive adoption accelerator if these products could immediately work in an IPMX environment.

During this session, Andreas Hildebrand will discuss how the addditional constraints and enhancements of the IPMX specifications affect interoperability with AES67 and ST 2110 audio devices and how they can be used in IPMX environments.

11:30 a.m. – noon

Content Provenance and Authenticity in the Context of Complex Digital Signal Processing

W2831 Theater 3 | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Theater 3 | Open to All Badge Holders

The expression, “a photo cannot lie”, could not be more debunked. A steady erosion of the barriers to producing fake but plausible visual media has occurred since the first development of photography at the end of the 19th century. The power and capability of tools and techniques available to bad actors have rapidly accelerated in recent decades and continue to do so at an increasing pace. Hence the need for robust mechanisms to ensure content provenance and authenticity have never been greater. The media industry was arguably caught on the back foot, lacking widely accredited mechanisms seeing near universal deployment across the entire production chain. Initiatives such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) are making headway in addressing this problem. While some content manipulation is entirely unavoidable for numerous technical and aesthetic reasons, this presentation explores how can we might best accommodate these necessary, and sometimes complex, modifications.

Locate Revenue Growth: Unlocking the Power of Secure Content Delivery

W1343 AWS Theater | Sponsored Floor Theaters | AWS Theater | Open to All Badge Holders

Since the early days, media rights deals have always revolved around where content can be accessed from. But in today’s connected world, users want to access what they want wherever they want. Luckily for consumers (but less lucky for streaming services), most streaming platforms still rely on technology invented over 40 years ago to determine where somebody is. Try Googling VPNs for any streaming site, and you’ll quickly find over 100 million responses. Even with the best VPN detection in place, consumers can still find a way through. Couple this with CDN leaching, password sharing and rampant piracy.

Surely there’s a better way to protect the billions of dollars of content out there?

This session by industry-leading geolocation services provider, GeoComply, explains how streaming platforms can continue to let honest users protect their information with VPNs whilst stopping fraudsters in their tracks.

And guess what? Your pizza delivery service is already doing it! Content protection is more than just a safety measure. It’s a powerful tool to grow your business and unlock revenue potential.

Navigating the Challenges of Cloud Workflows

SL9823 Creator Lab Theater B | NAB Show Programming | Creator Lab | Creator Lab Theater B | Open to All Badge Holders

While most cloud-based tools promise seamless collaboration, they also come with major drawbacks. Expensive storage, bandwidth limits, per-user fees, and create workflow bottlenecks. Internet dependency makes remote work vulnerable to slow connections while remote access put sensitive content at risk. Does a lack of true ownership mean creatives are locked into ecosystems they don’t control? For an industry built on flexibility and innovation, the cloud can feel more like a costly cage than a liberating tool.

Despite these challenges, filmmakers need efficient, scalable solutions that don’t break the bank or compromise creative control. Our panel will explore alternatives such as hybrid storage models, decentralized collaboration tools, and smarter local workflows to help bridge the gap between accessibility and affordability. By rethinking how we store, share, and edit content, the industry can move beyond cloud dependency and build a future that truly empowers creators.

Finding Your Perfect Technology Match on a Tighter Budget

SL9823 Creator Lab Theater B | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Creator Lab | Creator Lab Theater B | Open to All Badge Holders

The technology buying process is outdated and broken, but thankfully there is a solution to solve this  – in the form of good people. In this fireside chat, two long-time partners (Hollywood’s leading data storage and services platform provider, OpenDrives, along with trusted systems integration and reseller, Key Code Media) will share the story of how they came together to help solve the data storage and networking problems of one prestigious post-production studio, Goldcrest Post.

From creatives to the technologists to the heads of facility and IT managers – nobody wants to deal with aging, broken infrastructure and complex workflow solutions, especially in the world of media and entertainment. When every minute counts, outdated technology that doesn’t work can cost you big time in terms of production slowdowns, missed deadlines and, worst of all, poor creativity. Do you remember hating on anything and everything that took you out of your flow state? Every creative does, and it’s hard to give unreliable technology second chances.

However, not everyone is technologically savvy enough to know how to fix this. And when time is ticking, it’s difficult to know where to go and what to buy next. You’re stuck.

This is where the power of a good partnership comes in. You see, nobody really wants to buy technology. Why? Because the whole experience sucks. It’s lengthy, unnecessarily complicated and distasteful even. Sales pitches aren’t always truthful, and the marketing messaging you see on a website is not often what you get. So how do you get past all the fluff and straight to the facts? First, you have to realize that you’re not actually seeking technology; you need people you trust and respect. A good partner won’t sell you on speeds and feeds. They’ll ask you about your challenges and collaborate with you to find the right solution – whether you need something to solve performance, security, interoperability, complexity, flexibility, scalability, and of course price.

We hope you enjoy our story so you too can find your perfect technology match with the power of a good partnership.

Featuring:

Moderated by Michael Kammes, Creator and Host of 5 THINGS web series and Senior Director, Innovation at Key Code Media.

Domenic Rom, Managing Director at Goldcrest Post.

Sean Lee, CEO at OpenDrives.

Steve Rapanaro, Senior Account Manager at Key Code Media.

Q&A: Behind the Scenes of Running Major Live Streaming Events

W1343 AWS Theater | Sponsored Floor Theaters | AWS Theater | Open to All Badge Holders

Running a large live streaming event, such as the Olympics or Super Bowl, is no easy feat. Massive amounts of data are flowing from CDNs, origin, security and edge services, and devices. Gaining visibility into that data, in one view, is challenging considering it’s dispersed globally. Yet, viewers and advertisers demand a no buffering, error-free, reliable and fast digital experience. As we have seen in the past, just a few points of buffering can lead to social media insults and widespread brand damage.
Hydrolix, a streaming data lake company, provides a managed observability service that drives the largest live streaming events in the world. In partnership with AWS, Akamai and other cloud providers, Hydrolix ran the Super Bowl and Olympics. For Super Bowl 2025, Hydrolix was the sole multi-CDN observability provider for Fox Corporation. This Q&A session will feature Fox Sr. Director of Engineering, Dilip Singh, and Hydrolix CTOs Todd Persen and Catherine Johnson discussing what it takes to run a major live streaming event from preparation to game time to close. Think ingesting more than 1 petabyte of data a day, running 55,000 queries and 16x raw data compression. It may seem overwhelming but Hydrolix has proven it can be done.

Taking Control of Your Security

W2831 Theater 3 | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Theater 3 | Open to All Badge Holders

With video content distribution over the internet now the norm, security has become a vital consideration: no broadcaster wants to risk unauthorised content insertions and no producer can risk valuable intellectual property being intercepted. Yet despite this, security standards are not uniformly high – some popular encoders on the market store passwords in the clear! – and while video streams are becoming secured, the communications and control around them are still too often neglected.

In this session, Sergio Ammirata, founder and chief scientist of SipRadius, will look at real-world best security practices bringing communications and content into a common, hardened encryption model. Further, he will discuss the concept of self-hosting video distribution services, using open standards, using proven solutions from SipRadius and others alongside the availability of bandwidth capacity and stability, as the route to maximum security.

EBU Dynamic Media Facility: The Second Wave of Live Media Production

W2831 Theater 3 | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Theater 3 | Open to All Badge Holders

While many broadcast operations are software-based, live production and studio infrastructure still largely depend on specialist physical or stream interconnects between hardware devices (eg SDI or IP-equivalents such as ST 2110). This has been previously justified by bandwidth and latency concerns, but today’s compute and network infrastructure easily meet broadcasters’ requirements. Therefore, we are now seeing all-IT software-based live production frameworks from large broadcast vendors.

However, these first frameworks are proprietary, bringing interoperability challenges and vendor lock-in. The EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility initiative anticipates this by describing an architecture using generic compute clusters to replace many of the hardware devices in a facility. The architecture takes a layered approach inspired by that used by cloud hyperscalers and can take advantage of technologies and interfaces for each layer. In this architecture, “Media Functions” run in software containers to maximize workflow flexibility and resource utilization on multi-core/GPU servers.

The architecture also includes a high-performance Media Exchange Layer (MXL) for connecting Media Functions. This should not just replicate SDI, NDI or ST 2110, but enable things that weren’t possible before, such as “faster-than-live” working, seamless working between different facilities and use of timestamps for asynchronous workflows.

The EBU has been working with industry to define and demonstrate a practical MXL, built on high-speed local shared memory and remote direct memory access (RDMA) and OS-bypass networking. Unlike “traditional” standards, the group is adopting an “implement-first” approach with the team, working in an agile way to create an open-source SDK, which will start simple and add further required capabilities later.

This presentation will explain how Moore’s Law and similar trends justify the architecture, benefits and requirements of the DMF initiative, report on (and demonstrate) progress of MXL in the industry and outline next steps.

Breaking Cloud Barriers: Engineering a Portable, Scalable Video Platform for AWS, Azure and GCP

W2831 Theater 3 | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Theater 3 | Open to All Badge Holders

Today, competitive video platforms must handle skyrocketing traffic and evolving user demands with ease. Yet many solutions remain constrained by single-cloud architectures, resulting in vendor lock-in and limited scalability. Media organizations and service providers often have requirements influencing their cloud vendor choice. Flexibility in this choice improves pricing and service availability by allowing the option to choose any cloud provider and build redundancy across multiple providers.

This presentation will discuss how a “Build Fast, Scale Faster” approach transcends these barriers, delivering a fully portable, scalable video platform that seamlessly operates on AWS, Azure and GCP. Attendees will discover how they can give their streaming services the competitive edge – no matter which cloud (or clouds) they call home.

An infrastructure-as-code philosophy needs to be at the center of any such approach, combined with containerization and microservices. This presentation will cover how this trio enables platforms to spin up standardized environments, orchestrate multiple workloads and manage the lifecycle of key processes – including transcoding and content packaging – on any cloud. By abstracting services into modular components, consistent performance, rapid scaling, and the flexibility to dynamically allocate compute resources based on real-time demand can be achieved. The expertise to create, for example, a certain configuration of an HD streaming channel can be built into the deployment automation, rather than needing specific expertise to correctly size the necessary processing and storage.

The presentation will also investigate how breaking free from proprietary tools – including specialized storage, serverless functions and cloud-specific monitoring – can be crucial to achieving true portability. A systematic approach to replacing/refactoring these dependencies with cloud-agnostic and open-source alternatives enables a decoupled design that mitigates the risk of vendor lock-in. This approach simplifies updates, streamlines maintenance and delivers predictable performance regardless of provider-imposed changes or pricing fluctuations.

This presentation will also explore how Terraform and Kubernetes enable automated deployments, container orchestration and unified configuration management across AWS, Azure and GCP. A robust caching layer, combined with globally distributed edge resources, minimizes latency and ensures seamless streaming experiences. Centralized analytics and logging frameworks provide complete visibility of performance metrics, while dynamic load balancing across multiple clouds offers resilience against regional outages. Kubernetes Operators abstract detailed technical dependencies, allowing the vendor to provide infrastructure and service expertise, which is built into the deployment automation to ensure consistency and accuracy. These innovations collectively maintain the high-quality, stable video service end users expect.

Asynchronous Internode Media Transfer with Libfabric

W2831 Theater 3 | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Theater 3 | Open to All Badge Holders

As broadcast systems transition to standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computer platforms, efficient data exchange between compute nodes becomes an increasingly important issue to address. This session proposes using Libfabric, part of the Open Fabrics Interfaces (OFI) framework, as a method for sharing memory between compute processes running on different nodes, maintaining the asynchronous nature of how memory is dealt with in COTS platforms. By offering a streamlined interface, Libfabric abstracts hardware complexity, making it compatible with both on-premises and cloud-native platforms.

The session also examines the suitability of Libfabric for handling large media (eg Raw Video) and smaller media (eg mono channel audio), with consideration of key media requirements such as latency, throughput, processing time, and cost. Finally, it will present the results from work dealing with these types of media that highlight how Libfabric effectively supports various memory layouts, both contiguous and non-contiguous, in the context of media transfer in various networks.

Open Compute-Native Media Interconnect for Live Production

W2831 Theater 3 | Sponsored Floor Theaters | Theater 3 | Open to All Badge Holders

As the media industry moves towards software workflow for live production, there is a need to compute-native open interconnect of media flows. Currently all interconnect is based on linear/synchronous streaming interfaces. This is far from ideal for software systems and is very inefficient both in terms of use of compute and of aggregate latency.

VSF GCCG released a draft API last year which has now been prototyped and will be demonstrated as part of the presentation.

Reference will also be made to other industry initiatives that are underway to move towards a unified and open way of solving this key challenge for the industry
